05 September - The former head of the Army has accused ex-prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown of letting down British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.General Sir Richard Dannatt called Mr Brown "malign" for inadequately funding the armed forces.
He also said Mr Blair lacked the "moral courage" to make his then-chancellor deliver the money needed. The accusations appeared in General Dannatt's memoirs, Leading From The Front. In his book, serialised in the Sunday Telegraph, Gen Dannatt said evidence for Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction was "most uncompelling" and planning for the aftermath of war an "abject failure".
He conceded that the 1998 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) provided a "good framework" for defence policy in the Labour years. But insisted it was "fatally flawed" by being underfunded by Mr Brown's Treasury and was unable to cope with the strains of deploying troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan at the same time.
Blair and Brown come in for some harsh criticism from the former Army chief
"History will pass judgment on these foreign adventures in due course, but in my view Gordon Brown's malign intervention, when Chancellor, on the SDR by refusing to fund what his own government had agreed, fatally flawed the entire process from the outset," he wrote.
"The seeds were sown for some of the impossible operational pressures to come." Mr Blair "lacked the moral courage to impose his will on his own chancellor", the general continued. Gen Dannatt told the newspaper: "I felt it was pushing a rock up a steep hill pretty much all the way through."
He also warned that British troops should not stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014 or 2015, if casualty levels remain at their current rate. "We've got to have cracked it by 2014, 2015. You couldn't ask an organisation to go on taking this level of casualties for 10 years," the general said.

10 August - Speaking at a Conference in London Prof Max Taylor Director for the Study for Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews has said the Role that the Internet Plays in the Radicalisation of Terrorist Candidates has yet to be Fully Understood.
He also Said "While there is not a single way into terrorism, or one route to recruitment, there are general features or pathways,” Prof Taylor told delegates.
“One of the problems in understanding terror is that we tend to look at it as being special or political but you have to ask whether that is really the case. In my view, we simply have to be pragmatic and learn from what is already known.”
Prof Taylor pointed out that in a typical real-world model of recruitment into the Provisional IRA started with sympathisers becoming involved with community activity before moving to aiding and abetting those carrying out attacks.
“This logically leads people into violence, and when they become violent their status changes,” he said. “A violent man tends to find he has leadership opportunities, but once in leadership he can move into a more political role.”
He did not believe that legislative changes, such as had happened in the wake of recent global attacks, were always the best way forward, and pointed out that responses to IRA attacks of the 1970s and 80s had been more considered.
In addition, he believed it was vital that the public or the authorities did not “engage in stereotypes”, emphasising that terrorist acts were crimes, were not about mainstream religion, and that politicians needed to look at the long-term picture.
He believed that keeping control of the problem through a greater understanding of the underlying causes and radicalisation processes was the best way forward.
“We need to understand the terrorism and the terrorist,” Prof Taylor concluded. “Different types of terrorist mean different of responses – that is the challenge we face and something that the last government grappled with.”

21 July - During a Speech at the Farnborough International Air Show on Tuesday Defence Secretary Liam Fox said he is Committed to Ensuring that the UK has Appropriate Defences for the Threats that Face the UK.He is Committed to two Things,to Play his Part in Improving the Country's Fiscal Position and to Ensure that in this Rapidly Changing and Dangerous World and in this Tough Fiscal Climate the UK has Appropriate Defences for the Threats that are Faced.
He Also Said that he was Determined to Ensure the UK Retains Robust and Well Equipped Armed Forces Capable of Intervening Abroad where Necessary to Protect UK Security and interests at Home. This would mean when the National Interest Demands Maritime-Enabled Power Projection, the Capacity to Control Air-Space to Guarantee Freedom of Manoeuvre and the Ability to Deploy Land Power with the Logistical Strength to Sustain it.He added "the Current Defence Programme is Entirely Unaffordable, Especially if we try to do what we need to do in the Future While Simultaneously doing everything we have done in the past".
These are the unavoidable Realities which Govern the Strategic Defence and Security Review adding: "The fiscal realities will Unavoidably limit the amount of money the Government has available for Defence procurement in the years ahead. "So in this austere climate, to ensure this process is not detrimental either to our national security or to the prospects of one of our most profitable and successful industries, the Government is looking to find new ways of encouraging business. So there is a deal here to be struck.
The British Government will support the UK Defence Industry as a strategic asset; we will support the drive for exports with an active and innovative programme of Defence Diplomacy.
"We will ensure that our licensing system works efficiently while ensuring responsible exports.
"We will develop innovative training and exercise support in conjunction with industry.
"We will ensure that our own requirements for new equipment are designed from their inception with exportability in mind.
We will continue to ensure a dedicated focal point for Government support to exports, and let me pay tribute to the achievements the UKTI Defence and Security Organisation.
"We will reform our acquisition processes and provide our suppliers with increased clarity and predictability including a 10-year planning horizon agreed with the Treasury, audited by the NAO every year.
"And I am pleased to confirm that a new Defence Industrial Strategy will be published after the SDSR has concluded."
Dr Fox said that as part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review work there are three things that must be understood between the government and industry:
"First, without cost containment in the current programmes we have no option but to either cut the programmes currently underway or curtail investment in future programmes.
"Second, we must reduce fleet numbers that provide any one capability because we cannot afford the luxury of multiple supply chains and the associated training and infrastructure costs.
"Third, too often in the past we have simply replaced old platforms with an upgraded version of the same sort of equipment.
"If we continue to spend money on the next generation of what we already have, we will never give ourselves the opportunity to reshape expenditure plans to take into account the need to invest in the technology that is necessary to maintain our advantage in the constant battle for the upper hand in national security.
"So we will all need to think differently – and this is part of my challenge to you today.
"We need to make a conceptual leap and develop new capabilities that help us stay ahead of our opponents – particularly when faced with asymmetrical threats.
"We need to think carefully about what the 21st century battle space requires."

Its 70 Years since the Battle of Britain - . In the Summer of 1940 the German Luftwaffe tried to win Air Superiority over Britain and the English Channel with the Aim of Destroying the Royal Air Force and the British aircraft industry. This attempt came to be known as the Battle of Britain.
Victory over the RAF was seen by the Germans as Essential if they were Eventually to mount an invasion of the British Isles. It is Widely Believed that had the Germans Succeeded in their aim they would have been able to invade Britain relatively easily.Bitain was the only European Power Resisting Nazi Germany and this led to Winston Churchill's Famous speech to Parliament on 20 August, in which he said, 'Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few.' .
Both Germany and Britain were about evenly matched..The Principal German Fighter was the Messerschmitt Me 109E but it only had a range of 700 km which meant it had only 15 minutes fuel over Kent and was at the limit of its range over London. The two-engined Me-110 had a slightly longer range. The Germans used Two Engined Medium Bombers which were quite fast - The Dornier 17, The Junkers 88 and the Heinkel 111, as well as the Gull-Winged Junkers 87 'Stuka'. The Suka ws very effective in Support of the Army but Very Vulnerable to the RAF.
The RAF's Fighters were the Hawker Hurricane which was the mainstay of its effort, and the Supermarine Spitfire. The Spitfire was faster and more manoeuvrable but the Hurricane carried slightly more Ammunition Which made it lethal against the German Bombers. Many of the Pilots were from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and from European Countries which had been overrun by the Germans. The Experience of these Polish and Czech Squadrons certainly helped the RAF and Indeed they achieved a better Kill Ratio against the Germans than the British Squadrons.
The Battle of Britain began on 30 June 1940 when Reichsmarschall Hermann Göering who was head of the Luftwaffe ordering his force into Battle by Attacking Coastal Convoys and Bombing Radar Stations along the South Coast,Installations of the British Aircraft Industry, and RAF Airfields. The head of the British Fighter Command was Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding. The Germans has two major disadvantages A Germn Pilot was Lost to Germany and a Downed or Damaged Plane was likely to Ditch into the Sea. This Compares to damaged RAF Aircraft which could get home and Downed RAF Pilots Parachuted to English fields and returned to their units almost Immediately.
The Battle Officially began on 13 August 1940 , with the Germans calling it Adlertag ('Eagle day'). Five Waves of Bombers and Fighters were sent To destroy Nine Airfields - from Eastchurch to Portland. There were many times that it seemed Luftwaffe was going to Overwhelm the Kent and Sussex Sectors, but this never happened and their Airfields were Quickly Repaired and Replacement Aircraft and Pilots were drafted in.
The Luftwaffe lost a Total of 1,733 Aircraft from July to October and the RAF 915.However the Germans were Winning the battle of Attrition at this stage. However they were shocked and frustrated by the number of Allied Aircraft opposing them. In September they switched to night bombing of British Cities. The Blitz, as it was known continued after the Battle of Britain had finished. During the Blitz, between September 1940 and May 1941 the Germans dropped more than 35,000 tons of Bombs and lost 650 Aircraft. London was attacked 19 times with 18,800 tons of Bombs.
The brunt of the RAF defence was borne by 11 Group which covered Kent and Sussex.
The RAF defence was well organised as Radar would pick up an approaching Enermy Aircraft and relay the information to a sector airfield which in turn passed it to 11 Group HQ which was at Northolt. Group HQ would then inform Fighter Command and aircraft would be directed accordingly and if required aircraft from other sectors would be brought in.
When Germany switched attacks onto London their Fighters were to the limit of their Range and Brought them within range of 12 Group which was defending the Midlands. This switch by the Germans to City bombing allowed Fighter Command to recover.
On 17 September two days after the Luftwaffes worst day in the Battle of Britain Hitler cancelled Operation Sealion which was the name of his plan for the Invasion of Britain. However the Bombing of British Cities continued.Hitler now focused on Russia - and on 22 June 1941 the Germans launched the greatest land and air campaign in the history of war called Operation Barbarossa .Germany now aimed to invade the Soviet Union.

ITS SEVENTY YEARS SINCE THE EVACUATION OF DUNKIRK......................

A fleet of "Little Ships" led by the 45ft motor Yacht Thamesa and Veterans have gathered in Ramsgate to re-enact the dramatic rescue.Upto 60 small vessels assisted in Operation Dynamo, which started on 26 May 1940,will re-enact the journey. The re-enactment takes place every five years.
A fleet of fishing boats and pleasure craft assisted naval vessels in the evacuation of around 300,000 allied troops from the French Coast.
The few remaining survivors will be joined by the ships which will sail today 27 May and will be escorted by the Royal Navys HMS Monmouth and Ramsgates RNLI Lifeboat. The ships will make their return journey on Monday 31st May 2010.
A ceremony on Saturday will be held in Dunkirk to mark the event.

Known as Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk was an attempt to save Britain's army from defeat.
Almost 400,000 soldiers had been fighting the Germans in Northern France and Belgium. They unfortuantely were completely overwhelmed by Hiters army and by late May 1940 almost the entire British Army was trapped along the beaches surrounding the French Town of Dunkirk after being pounded and pushed back through France and Belgium by the German Panzer Divisions .
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill launched operation Dynamo on 26 May 1940.
Anyone with a boat was asked to set sail to Dunkirk with the hope of rescuing at least some of the soldiers.Passenger Ferries led the rescue convoy from Southampton and Dover and due German shelling the ships had to head to the beaches East of Dunkirk. The big ships were prevented getting close to the shore so a convoy of little ships, pleasure craft, fishing boats and tugs sailed from the UK on 29th May 1940.
Astonishingly 338,226 men landed safely back to Britain between May 26th and June 5.The evacuation was helped by loud cloud and burning oil which gave extra cover for the troops escape.
The event will also remember those who died, the brave men who remained back in Dunkirk to hold back the Germans.
In all 68,111 were killed,18,000 of this number were on ships that were sank by the Germans and the remaining 41,000 never made it onto a rescue boat.
Its very important to remember that had the Dunkirk rescue failed Germany would have won the war.
