Brass mounted mahogany two part campaign chest
The date of this chest is circa 1830
This chest has brass bound edges and is in very good unrestored condition
There are three large draws,and two smaller top draws
The draws have sunken brass handles in a lovely ornate design
The draws all have solid bottoms and are joined together with Dovetail joints
This campaign chest is 45" high x ,18.5" wide x 39" long.
This is a fantastic example of campaign furniture and a must for any collector.

Campaign Furniture has been around since the time of Julius Caesar.
This type of furniture is designed to be folded up and packed away so it can be carried by travelling armies.
It became very popular in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries following the rise of the British empire and the domination of the gentleman within the army.
British designers such as Chippendale,Sheraton and Heplewhite all competed to design Chairs,Tables,Bookcases,Desks,Chests,Beds and Washstands.
British officers and civilian gentleman travelling to India,North America and the rest of the British Empire could take a complete suite of furniture with them for their new life so they could enjoy the same standard of life as they did at home.
Campaign or knock down furniture as it was also called gave 'Life Under Canvas'a degree of comfort for the gentleman or officer.
There were a close relationship between campaign and household furniture with the only real difference being that the campaign furniture was designed to be folded up,packed away in boxes without the use of tools or nails and then be transported to another destination.
Many London cabinet makers catered especially fro the needs of ships officers and ships passengers.Sea voyages could take months and military campaigns could take many years so therefore officers,tea planters and other civilians equipped themselves with as much furniture and home comforts as possible.Campaign furniture was ideal for ship travel as it could easily be stowed within the ship before being carried onto its final destination by slaves or animals
